Is HeatShield® Chimney Relining Right for You? We’re Here to Help

Annual inspections are a must when you own a fireplace. Every industry expert will tell you the same thing – scheduling those overviews is the best way to keep your chimney in good shape and avoid damages in the future. But some homeowners find them to be a bit of hassle… After all, aren’t chimneys known for being strong, sturdy, and reliable? Do they really need to be inspected by a professional before every burning season?

Well, here’s the thing. Although your chimney may seem unbreakable and in good shape on the outside, there could be any number of dangers hidden within it – ones that only someone with professional knowledge and insight can spot.

One issue we sometimes discover in a broken down chimney is a damaged or deteriorated flue liner. Many assume that if their liner is broken down, adding a new liner or rebuilding the entire chimney are the only two options for moving forward. And since both of these are usually expensive endeavors, it can leave homeowners feeling frustrated and backed into a corner.

But we may have a better option for those in Hillsborough and the surrounding area – one that won’t break the bank. Ask us about relining with HeatShield®.

What Is HeatShield® for Chimneys?

Heat can cause chimney flue liners to crack or deteriorate over time, which can result in dangerous conditions, such as carbon monoxide leaks or chimney fires. Moisture can cause similar damage, particularly if the chimney is exposed to water from rain or snow.

HeatShield® is a liner repair system used to restore and repair chimney flue liners that have been damaged by heat, water, or other factors. It uses a ceramic-based sealant, which is applied to the inside of the chimney flue liner to create a new, smooth surface.

These methods started developing over two decades ago in Europe, and all HeatShield® options use a specially formulated Cerfractory® Flue Sealant to effectively seal the chimney.

What Are the Types of HeatShield® Relining?

When we move forward to repair your chimney with HeatShield®, we’ll use one of three methods, depending on the current state of your system – the Joint Repair System, the Resurfacing System, or the CeCure® Sleeve Relining System.

  • Joint Repair System: This is best for chimneys with defective mortar joints, but no other serious damage in the lining system. It involves positioning a custom-made foam applicator blade at the bottom of the chimney, then pulling it up while adding the Cerfractory® Flue Sealant, so it fills in every gap or void. In the end you’re left with a smooth, seamless, and uncracked liner for your flue.
  • Resurfacing System: If you’re dealing with damaged mortar joints along with other minor defects, then this would be the better route for you. A custom-made applicator plug will be placed at the bottom of your chimney. It’s then pulled up by a winch, while applying a “tie coat” to prime the flue. After this, the Cerfractory® Flue Sealant is applied at a ¼” thickness to give your chimney a new, smooth, and reliable wall.
  • CeCure® Sleeve Relining System: Is your chimney experiencing some major damage – or is it not lined at all? This is the method for you. During this process, a layer of Cerfractory® Flue Sealant will be applied, followed by the CeCure® Sleeve, which is a thin and insulated ceramic sleeve that is reinforced with stainless steel fabric. We follow this up with another layer of Cerfractory® Flue Sealant to seal things up, and then you’re all set.

HeatShield® comes with a limited lifetime warranty, so you can rest easier knowing you’re covered and taken care of for the long haul. Is HeatShield® Chimney Relining Suitable for All Types of Chimneys?

For most damaged brick or masonry chimney systems, HeatShield® is a suitable option for restoring or repairing it. It can be used after all types of major incidents, like chimney fires, extensive water damage, and more, and it has been tested and proved effective on single, double, and triple-flue chimneys.

All that said, it isn’t suitable for use on metal or prefabricated flues. Consult with a professional chimney sweep – like us – to determine if HeatShield® could be a suitable option for your needs.

What are the Benefits of HeatShield® Chimney Relining?

It’s clear that HeatShield® provides both a safe and cost-effective way of improving your chimney lining’s functionality and structural integrity. What else does it offer?

  • Lowered Fire Risk: If your liner is damaged or showing signs of deterioration, your whole household will be at risk for fire hazards. In fact, flames could reach your home’s woodwork in only a matter of hours. Repairing with HeatShield® minimizes the risk of fires dramatically.
  • Lowered Risk of Gas Leaks: Cracks and gaps throughout your flue give the products of combustion (like smoke, carbon monoxide, and other fumes) easy pathways to your home. A liner that’s been fortified with HeatShield® will simply guide these gases up and out – not into your home.
  • Increased Durability: HeatShield® reinforces your chimney, making it stronger than ever and ready to stand strong against heat, moisture, and more. This will help extend the lifespan of your chimney and keep it running well for the long haul.
  • Improved Efficiency: If your liner is filled with cracks, gaps, and other flaws, smoke isn’t going to flow smoothly and efficiently. This not only decreases the efficiency of your entire system, but makes your flue more prone to buildup and further damage. Get a smooth and seamless liner with HeatShield®.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to other relining options, HeatShield® is one of the most cost-effective options available. It has helped numerous homeowners avoid a time-consuming and expensive rebuild.

Is HeatShield® better than traditional relining options?

It certainly can be! First and foremost, it comes with a limited lifetime warranty, so you rest assured that it’ll last. This isn’t the case for other relining options, like having an aluminum liner installed. In addition, there’s no demolition services required, so this isn’t going to be a disruptive or time-consuming undertaking for your household.

And because installation is quicker and easier than other options, this is typically a cheaper relining choice as well. In the end, HeatShield® often comes out on top as the superior relining method when compared to other methods.

That said, the right relining option for you may be another method. For a job this important, be sure to talk with our sweeps about where you stand and what our recommendations are based on your current setup. Rest assured, no matter which path you take, our experts can set you up right.

How Much Does Relining With HeatShield® Cost?

Compared with other relining methods, HeatShield® is known for being extremely cost-effective. That’s because other options tend to include things like tearing down your existing structure, resurfacing services, and adding insulation, all of which increases labor costs and causes your final bill to go up pretty quickly.

All in all, HeatShield® involves minimal labor and can be completed relatively quickly. If you’re looking for a way to restore your liner and keep your chimney in good shape for the long haul, HeatShield® is one of the most affordable ways to do so.

How Does Someone Become a HeatShield® Installer?

HeatShield® Installers receive education through SaverSystems if they’re accepted into the training program. When the training program has been completed, techs are able to purchase HeatShield® products and complete the services for qualifying homeowners (as long as they continue meeting the necessary requirements).

How does a company qualify to become a HeatShield® Installer?

  • They must be daily involved in cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and relining masonry chimneys.
  • They must be certified from one or more nationally recognized organizations.
  • They must be a member of either (or both) the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) or the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA).
  • They must offer Level 2 chimney inspections.
  • They must complete the HeatShield® Installer factory training course.

As you can see, it’s no easy feat, and it’s one that sweeps don’t take lightly. Rest assured, if you have a HeatShield® Installer on the job, they know their stuff, and they’ve worked hard to be able to offer this service.

Are Heatshield® Chimney Relining Products Environmentally-Friendly?

Heatshield® is well-known for providing ethically-responsible and eco-friendly products, and their solutions and sealants are created with both efficiency and sustainability in mind. In fact, all of their products are made with recycled materials, so getting behind their relining methods is easy for those looking to go greener.

Remember that relining with HeatShield® also means saving significantly on energy costs. So, not only will your carbon footprint decrease, but your monthly bills will too – can’t beat that.

How Long Before I Can Use My Fireplace After Heatshield® Products Are Applied?

Typically, you’ll only need to wait 24 hours after your HeatShield® method is complete before you can put your fireplace to use again.

Why the waiting period? The material used to get the job done needs to cure in order to provide those long-lasting results you’re hoping for. Using your system too soon can lead to issues like gas exposure, smoke in your living space, or inefficiency.

All that said, a full day isn’t too long of a wait for such an affordable and high-quality solution to your chimney relining needs. So, wait it out, and you can fully enjoy all the benefits before you know it.

Does Highpoint Offer Other Relining Methods?

Yes – we can also install a new stainless steel liner. Why might a homeowner go with stainless steel over HeatShield®? Stainless steel liners are known for being extremely durable, corrosion-resistant, rust-resistant, easy to install, and extremely safe. They’ll easily withstand the high temps your system produces, and they’re sure to keep your household well protected for the long haul. They even come with a lifetime warranty when professionally installed.

All that said, they tend to be quite pricey, which is why so many opt for HeatShield® if their system qualifies for it. We’d be happy to go over both options more closely, so you can feel good about where your system stands.
