We love serving and living around the Hillsborough area. Our favorite part? When the weather starts to change and the leaves appear to glow in hues of yellow, orange, and red…also known as, the time of year when we can light a fire in the fireplace and not worry about getting too sticky. And fall isn’t too far away!
However, we also know that without regular chimney cleaning or sweeping, this is but a faraway fantasy.
Fortunately, the Highpoint crew can help homeowners in the area get their fireplaces ready for cooler temps, ensuring that you and your loved ones can experience the magic of a home-built fire. With over two decades of excellent service, Highpoint is the place to call for all your chimney questions and needs. Reach out today!
Chimney Cleaning vs. Chimney Sweeping: Is There a Difference?
So, here’s the thing. Chimneys have an important, albeit dirty, role to play. They provide a streamlined exit for all the harmful vapors, gases, chemicals, and other byproducts created during combustion, and without your chimney, your walls, floor, and ceiling would be coated in soot and other debris – not to mention the damage you’d do to your lungs breathing in fire smoke directly.
That said, there really is no way to actually clean a chimney. We can clear it of various substances and make sure nothing is being obstructed, but to actually get in there and make a chimney squeaky clean, in the purest and most accurate definition of the word, is impossible.
Hence the term “sweeping.” Utilizing specifically formed and designed brushes made of varying materials depending on the type of chimney, chimney sweeps “sweep” out all the caked-on ash, soot, creosote, and other debris that might have found its way into the inner walls of your chimney. Thus, in many cases, and for many companies, the two words “cleaning” and “sweeping” are used somewhat interchangeably, with no real difference in the actual process and procedure.
Why Are Annual Chimney Inspections Important?
According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), regulation code requires chimneys be thoroughly inspected every year in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Even if you don’t regularly utilize your fireplace/chimney system, it’s important to schedule an inspection because you never know what could be lurking in the depths of your flue – especially if the system does not see regular fires.
What kinds of things do we inspect for? Well, anything and everything you can think of. We don’t take it lightly that an appliance such as a chimney comes into contact with the dangerous, harmful fumes and gases present in a fire and can also be the perfect breeding ground for animals.
A chimney appears to be rather simple – a structure connecting a heat and exhaust-producing appliance to a channel that ventilates those byproducts out of a home. In praxis, though, a chimney’s makeup is intricate and intentional. Everything you can see on the outside works in tandem with all the parts on the inside and, in order for a system to function properly, all of them need to be inspected. The negligence of chimney inspections and regular maintenance can put you and your family at risk for dangers like carbon monoxide poisoning, unpleasant odors, and chimney fires.
We’re huge believers in taking a proactive approach instead of a reactive one, especially when it comes to the safety of your home and family.
